If I could have a superpower, I would love to have the ability to fly. Even though I have a fear of heights, I think that it would be alot of fun to soar over mountains and tickle the treetops…..stop – I’m getting queasy just thinking about it. Maybe x-ray vision? Nah, there are so many things that are best left to the imagination. I’ve got it – Elastigirl from The Incredibles! She could reach around the table and grab two kids at once so dinner could resume. Now that’s a power every mom needs. But, I’m just me, struggling through the ups and downs of everyday life.
“He made the earth by His power…”
Now that’s a superpower.
A few years ago, I played a role in our church’s VBS live action recreation of Bethlehem village. I was the “Wise One”. My job was to engage the parents and kids in converstion to ensure that everyone was catching the actions of the various players. I had alot of fun and enjoyed pretending that I was the very wise matriachal leader of the village. I probably enjoyed it so much because it was quite the opposite of my reality. I’m usually pretty confused, missing the jokes and not really considered wise. But I sometimes get a flash of wisdom that is definitely heaven inspired.
“…He founded the world by His wisdom…”
Earthly wisdom has nothing on Godly wisdom.
If I can’t be wise, than I would like to at least have a working understanding of things. I don’t need to be a Rhodes Scholar but I do like to have a clue once in a while. Yet things as simple as the laughter of a child, the beauty of a daisy or the melodies of raindrops on a window pane can overwhelm me.
…” and stretched out the heavens by His understanding.”
So sit down and look up at the sky. Take in that impossibly blue color against the puffs of giant clouds. Stop and notice that dewdrop that got caught up in the web as the sunlight finds it. Watch a golden leaf spiral down with that little gust of wind. Do you understand it? Do you really need to?
He is power, wisdom and understanding beyond our capabilities, yet still blesses us with just enough power to get through each day, just enough wisdom to know enough to follow HIm and a small glimpse of the workings of His boundless love to help us understand it all.
He made the earth by His power;
He founded the world by His wisdom
and stretched out the heavens by His understanding.”
